2014 Summer Music Camp Co-Sponsors
G-Clef Music Academy, a Virgin Islands non-profit organization, is on a mission to help children. One of our major goals is to make the music camp available to low-income and under-served youth on the islands of St. Thomas and St. John. To assist us in fulfilling this mission, we have collaborated with the VI Department of Human Services’ Foster Care Program. The Foster Care division recommends foster children from their program. Your monetary support will go towards FULL tuition for Summer Music Camp and After-School Program participants.
G-Clef Music Academy conducts its annual Summer Music Camp in the months of June and July. The camp is held Monday through Friday, from 8:00am to 3:30pm for children ages 6 through 16. G-Clef is excited about providing the camp at its new location inside the LaBorde Plaza Building on the second floor. The six-week camp provides an introduction to eight music disciplines: piano, guitar, violin, woodwind, brass, steel pan, drums, and voice. It also provides a detailed overview of music theory and offers an opportunity for students to perform individually and in ensembles. The main purpose of the camp is to introduce children to various music instruments, while sharpening their intuitive abilities and enhancing their team-building skills. G-Clef seeks grant/sponsorship dollars to provide scholarships to foster children. See details on the sponsorship levels below. Making One Sound
We kicked off our first summer camp with the development of a youth band that played pop and local tunes. The band included our cultural steel pan flavor. In 2012, we added our first string ensemble to the camp, which highlighted the inclusion of violins to our program. In 2013, we took our program up a notch and created our first youth orchestra that featured strings, brass and woodwind instruments. It was a big accomplishment and very exciting for the Academy and the community! In 2014, the summer camp youth orchestra played again with enthusiastic students. The orchestra is being developed as the G-Clef Community Youth Orchestra! Youth from various schools will join together at G-Clef's new facility at the LaBorde Plaza to make stupendous symphonic sounds during the school year. We need your help in purchasing instruments to make one sound.
Children, age 6 and up, who desire to play an instrument, are encouraged to get formal training through G-Clef's After-School Programs. The After-School programs are held throughout the school year, from 3:30 to 5:30pm. Similar to the summer program, G-Clef offers eight music disciplines: piano, guitar, violin, woodwind, brass, steel pan, drums, and voice. The major difference is that children can receive private or group lessons on a weekly basis. Our new After-School Academy allows children to learn multiple instruments (piano, guitar or violin), twice a week in a group setting. The After-School Program begins in September and concludes in May, the following year. Recitals are also a key component to the program.

Summer Music Camp
The Nearly 40 students dauned their G-Clef Summer Camp T-Shirts at the 2014 Summer Music Camp Recital on July 31, 2014 at Prior-Jollek Hall on the Antilles School Campus on St. Thomas to culminate the summer camp activities. Students performed individually and in small ensembles on the piano, guitar, steel pan, drums and violin during the recital. It was the first time many of the students played an instrument. The youth orchestra and ensembles gave the students a chance to play familiar songs in a group. The event concluded with a rousing rendition of Pharrell Williams' song "Happy" by the G-Clef choir and percussion ensemble.

Music brings a sense of discipline and order into the lives of all who come in contact with it. Music builds confidence, self-esteem and shows students how to be a team player. G-Clef Music Academy provides a place where beginners can explore and develop their musical abilities. It provides access to children who would not have the opportunity to touch as many instruments as possible.
